How Can I Start an SWP? Minimum Amount, Setup and Stopping an SWP

Starting an SWP generally involves holding units in an eligible mutual fund scheme, selecting a redemption amount and frequency, and setting up the instruction through the fund or platform route offered by the provider.

What is the minimum amount to do an SWP?

There is no single universal minimum that applies to every mutual fund and every SWP instruction. Minimum redemption amounts, dates, frequency and other conditions can be scheme- or platform-specific. Check the current scheme documents and the AMC's instructions.

Can I start an SWP with ₹1 lakh?

You can model a ₹1 lakh starting corpus in our calculator. Whether a particular mutual fund and AMC will accept the exact SWP instruction depends on that product's current terms, minimum redemption rules and the units you hold.

How do I set up an SWP?

  1. Choose the mutual fund holding from which units will be redeemed.
  2. Check its current SWP eligibility, minimum amount and frequency rules.
  3. Choose the withdrawal amount and start date.
  4. Review taxes, exit-load conditions and other product-specific terms that can apply.
  5. Submit the instruction through the available AMC, registrar, distributor or platform workflow.

Can I stop SWP anytime?

Many platforms allow an SWP instruction to be cancelled or modified, but the exact notice, cut-off and processing rules are provider-specific. Confirm the current process with the AMC or platform managing the folio.

What should I check before starting?

Look at the underlying fund, your cash-flow need, the withdrawal amount, likely investment volatility, tax treatment, any exit load and what you will do if the corpus falls sharply.
